Southern
Cape & the Garden Route - including the Whale Coast:
Travelling
along the rugged southern Cape coast, where southern right whales
frolic, to the city of Port Elizabeth, an array of natural wonders
unfold. The famous Garden Route is beautiful and unspoilt, embracing
mountains, lagoons, lakes, beaches and indigenous forests, with
its coastline dotted with quaint towns and villages. Hermanus,
with its old harbour, offers some of the best land-based whale
watching on earth, beautiful walks and, for adrenalin seekers,
cage-diving with Great White sharks nearby. Knysna, set around
a tranquil lagoon, is the ideal place from which to explore the
Garden Route, with the beaches of Plettenberg Bay, the forests
of Tsitsikamma and the lake areas around Wilderness within easy
reach. In Knysna, sample oysters at the waterfront, explore the
Knysna heads, sail out to sea at sunset, take a ride on the Outeniqua
Choo-Tjoe, or visit galleries and flea markets. Nearby Plettenberg
Bay is flanked by beautiful rivers and lagoons, and boasts 12
km of golden beaches. Robberg Nature Reserve offers dramatic walking
trails, whilst whale and dolphin encounters, river cruises and
mountain biking through forests, can also be experienced. With
its primeval forests, mountain scenery, rivers, streams and panoramic
views, Tsitsikamma National Park is truly beautiful. Leap off
the highest bungi-jump in the world, take a boat trip up the Storms
River, abseil, quad bike, horse-ride, hike through forests or
take a tree top canopy excursion. Nearby, visit Nature’s
Valley, with its peaceful lagoon, or Monkeyland, a sanctuary for
primates. For those wanting to add wildlife to their Cape experience,
various safari options are available near Port Elizabeth. Addo
Elephant National Park, Shamwari Private Game Reserve, or Kwandwe
Private Game Reserve, all offer close up game viewing and luxury
lodges.
The region also boasts some of the finest golf course locations
in the world, and we can arrange golfing at renowned clubs, such
as Steenberg, Erinvale, Arabella, Fancourt, Sparrebosch, and Goose
Valley.
Between June and November you can experience some of the world’s finest whale watching by visiting Hermanus, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Arniston, De Hoop Nature Reserve or Plettenberg Bay, along the Cape Whale coast. View the giant mammals from shore as close as 10 metres away, or set out by boat for thrilling ocean viewing. Stay in one of the delightful establishments along the Whale coast and enjoy fine cuisine and scenery.
