Route
62 (9 days):
For
those who prefer the road less travelled, Route 62 is a superb
choice, embracing the longest wine route in the world, spectacular
scenery and an endless horizon of mountains. From Cape Town, you
enter a world of vineyards and orchards, old towns flanked by
oaks, historical buildings, botanical gardens and world class
restaurants. Staying in country retreats and homely guest houses,
you will be tantalised by a choice of activities - walks, hiking
trails, trout fishing, mountain biking, horse-riding, wine and
olive tastings, 4x4 trails and rock climbing. For the first 2
days explore the historical winelands of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek
and Paarl. On Day 3 tour north east through the mountainous Cape
Boland region, visiting Wellington, historical Tulbagh, Ceres
and Worcester, as well as the small towns of Robertson, McGregor,
Bonnievale, Ashton and Montagu. On Day 4 visit Barrydale and Calitzdorp,
before stopping overnight in fascinating Oudtshoorn, home of ostrich
farming and the Cango Caves. Spend Day 5 exploring Oudtshoorn’s
attractions, before travelling to the quaint Karoo village of
Prince Albert. Spend the last 3 days relaxing in Plettenberg Bay,
holiday mecca for sun-worshippers, or in tranquil Knysna, a nature
lover’s paradise. On Day 9 return to Cape Town from George
or Port Elizabeth by air, or travel on to the Eastern Cape.
