Sally was born in Malacca, Malaysia and as a result, has travelled
all over Malaysia as well as Singapore. After leaving school,
she hitched a ride to Spain where she spent six months, at which
time she also visited Morocco. She later worked as an au pair
in Rome and travelled extensively around France and Portugal for
some time.
Her passion for Africa grew after a holiday in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia as it was known at the time). In the seventies, she spent two years working in Salisbury (Harare as it’s now known), Kariba and Victoria Falls.
Her first job in the tourism industry was in a small London travel agency which allowed her the opportunity to visit the USA, Canada, Australia, India and Nepal. She later joined Abercrombie & Kent in London where she worked on the Southern Africa and Indian Ocean desk. During her time with Abercrombie & Kent, she was fortunate enough to visit Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Mauritius and the Seychelles.
In 1989, Phillip Lategan got in touch with Sally from South Africa and presented her with the opportunity of

joining Afro Ventures, which at that time was a small safari company
specialising in overland tours. Sally jumped at the opportunity
and moved from London to Johannesburg. In the 11 years that followed,
Afro Ventures became a highly respected tour operator specialising
in all types of travel through Southern Africa. Sally was instrumental
in having developed the huge variety of product offerings that
Afro Ventures now offered in the years since she had joined and
has exceptional and almost unrivalled knowledge of the tourism
products available in destinations such as Botswana, Namibia,
Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, Mocambique
and South Africa and has travelled extensively within each of
these countries.
After the merger of Afro Ventures with Conservation Corporation Africa in March 2000, Sally continued in her role as Product Director until March, 2002 when she left to once again join Phillip Lategan, this time in the setting up Journey Beyond, 13 years after she first moved to South Africa to work with Phillip. |

Sally says that she has been extremely fortunate in that she has
visited literally hundred's of wonderful lodges, camps and hotels
throughout the Southern and East Africa regions. In addition,
she has been invited to the opening of a number of terrific properties
where she has met both the Presidents of Botswana and of Mocambique.
In her words, “I have experienced so many extraordinary places from secret islands in the Okavango Delta, the remote and beautiful Skeleton Coast, never to be forgotten desert landscapes in Namibia, one of the seven natural wonders of the world - Victoria Falls, Lake Malawi - the lake of stars and the stunningly beautiful Lake Kariba, Ngorongoro Crater, the Selous Game Reserve and the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti........ and so the list goes on”. |
